WASHINGTON D.C. – President Barack Obama has attributed his bold stance on gay marriage to a two season marathon of musical drama Glee.
By announcing his support for gay marriage, the President risked incurring an electoral backlash from more conservative voters and fans of straight shows like Ultimate Fighter where sweaty men roll around in a cage in efforts to make each other submit.
He has become the first sitting U.S. president to back same-sex marriage in addition to the first straight man to watch this much Glee.
Glee factor
President Obama said his view had been affected by the realisation that his daughters, Sasha and Malia, were hooked to the show.
“I’m more of a CSI man myself,” he confessed. “But the girls adore Glee and I thought ‘what the hell’. It can’t be any worse than Heroes.”
It’s thought President Obama only watched the marathon session, which ran back to back episodes over two days, after deciding to skip a staff meeting to discuss the closure of Guantanamo Bay.
“From the rendition of Don’t Stop Believing, all that was going through my mind is that this show is totally gay,” recalled Obama.
“But by the time Brittany gives that speech on acceptance I thought to myself: these kids are just like you and me and if they want to sing from the same hymn sheet who am I to oppose that?”
Hearing the lesbian gym teacher sing Madonna’s Vogue only strengthened his support for gay couples to wed.
Conservative response
He has taken a huge gamble in an election year as polls show many voters unlikely to back a candidate who has seen even a single episode of Glee.
Indeed, his views have come into heavy criticism from Republicans, with former GOP candidate Newt Gingrich calling for the protection of marriage between a man and “however many wives that man would like to have.”
While deep south states insist the union of man and man is “very disturbing” as “the institution of marriage should only ever be a union of man and woman. And if they are cousins all the better.”
The President also stated his views on gay marriage had “evolved”, another reason he has angered Republicans who remain adamant the president’s views must have been created by an omnipotent force.
However, despite growing acceptance, conservative lawmakers could have the last word as they vow to make gay divorce illegal.
