WHITE HOUSE – The race for the Republican presidential nominee has been shaken up with news that Barack Obama has strongly endorsed Newt Gingrich as his pick to face Barack Obama in the November election.
Mr Obama was reportedly so please by the results from the southern state he declared: “At this point a vote for Gingrich would feel as good as a vote for me.”
According to former front-runner Donald Trump, the vote of confidence represented the most high-profile endorsement of the campaign since he endorsed himself.
Presidential backing
Speaking with what was described as an unnaturally large smile, Mr Obama said in “no uncertain terms that Newt is the only man I want to see run against me.”
After watching “enough” of Republican debates, he agreed that while there were many suitable candidates, he was confident the former House Speaker was the man best suited to leading Republicans in a direction “I would really really love to see.”
The president did acknowledge that “Newt isn’t perfect” and expressed “deep regret” Sarah Palin stayed out of the race entirely. However, given the current field of hopefuls, “Newt Gingrich is the best of the bunch”.
Unable to contain his laughter, the president then began giggling uncontrollably for the next five minutes.
Regaining his composure, he went on to add: “Newt has all the assets you could hope for as an incumbent: His ability to alienate voters is unparalleled, he is completely insufferable, and has had more wives than the number of times I’ve been compared to Hitler.”
‘I’d vote for him’
The president was criticised by Mitt Romney’s campaign who thought they had done enough to get the nod having run an emotionless campaign with more awkward flip-flopping than a fish out of water.
But opinion polls now clearly showed Gingrich leading with voters who identify themselves as members of the Obama administration.
“This was a good win for the Gingrich campaign,” said White House Chief of Staff Jacob Lew who revealed the president had been doing cartwheels around the Oval Office. “But it was an even better win for us – we really couldn’t be happier.”
With his support now firmly behind a candidate, President Obama said he would now turn his attention to “chilling out and catching up with some reading or television” in the months before the November elections.
“I never did get to watch Game of Thrones – I hear it’s pretty good.”
