MISSISSIPPI – Congressman Gene Taylor has rocked the US midterm elections after a shocking admission that he is Democrat. The revelation by Taylor, an incumbent facing a tough reelection battle comes a day before midterm voting and will surely damage his chances at securing the seat. Taylor made the announcement in front of a press gathering, accompanied by his wife and three young children; all looked distraught at the humiliation. At the briefing Taylor said the following:
“I have gone to great lengths to hide who I am, even voting for [John] McCain in 2008. But I can no longer live like this. I am Democrat. I have been for my entire political career. I have cavorted with other Democrats and have even voted with the party most of the time. And my tie is blue. No amount of TV advertising will change this fact. I want to apologise to the people who thought I was something else, and most importantly to my family who do not deserve the trauma I have put them through.”
Don’t ask don’t tell
Speculation has dogged Taylor’s political orientation his whole career with many political blogs long suspecting him to be Democrat, or at least bi-partisan. He is just one of many suspected Democrats thought to be secretly participating in the election, worried that the truth would do unrecoverable damage to their political careers.
Fearful Democrats are instead having to work to keep their political orientation secret, many have long resorted to using TV advertising in desperate efforts to distance themselves from the party ever since Barack Obama stopped being popular.
Hostile environment
Although requesting to remain anonymous for fear of discrimination come voting time, a number of Democrats hailed the ‘brave’ stand, hoping it will pave the way for greater acceptance of the Democrat party. However, liberal political commentator Paul Krugman branded Taylor ‘naive’ for revealing the kind of truth that should have been kept hidden until after the election as “nobody is going to vote for an openly Democrat candidate in today’s America.”
Indeed, given the country’s disdain for Democrats, it appears Taylor’s chances of success are now at slim to none. “I never would have guessed he was Democrat,” admitted shocked Mississippi voter Adam Kent. “I suppose what he does behind close doors is his business, but I definitely won’t be voting for him now.”
